Beginner 1: Session 1

We will make a throw pillow and upcycle a tshirt by adding a pocket and a back gusset or a split tshirt.

Beginner 1: Session 2

We’ll get started right away making a reversible apron and PJ pants or shorts.

Beginner 1: Session 3

Your choice of a hat or skirt, then we’ll make a tote bag

Beginner 1: Session 4

Pillowcase and your choice of leggings or shorts

Beginner 1: Session 5

Make a shirt you can wear! And a zipper pouch.

more about the classes

  • Ages 8+
  • Each class is 1 hour and 15 minutess
  • Must have attended our Beginner Workshop before enrolling
  • Everything will be provided, no need to bring any materials except basic supply kit
  • Class size is maxed 4 students for a great deal of personal attention
  • Most beginner sessions will complete 2 projects during the 6 weeks
  • Stop and start units as your child’s schedule allows. Going to be gone for an extended vacation? Skip a six week unit and start where you left off when you sign up for the next unit.

We start with the Beginner Workshop

The Intro Beginner workshop is for ages 8+ and is a prerequisite to enrolling in our 6 week classes.

We use skill-based progression

Each class builds on the skills they know, actively challenging your child. We create a variety of projects during our 6 week classes

We’ll learn about Fabrics and Tools

Sewing on the machine is only part of creating fun and wonderful projects. Fabric selection and using other tools is just as important as the stitching.

Never Repeat a Class Project

Our program is extensive and they can take classes for 4 years and never do the same project!

Kelley Klahn, Treynor IA

has been sewing since Middle School and studied it for years—including a year at college—because she truly loves it.

As a grandma, she enjoys helping kids learn real sewing skills in a safe, encouraging environment where they can build confidence and creativity.

Our classes and workshops open for signup are listed on our Class Schedule page.

During our first year, we are starting the lessons at 8 and up. Some kids can be ready to sew at 7 so we’re considering adding the 7 year olds after our first full year.

Yes, we are using Sewciety Kids curriculum and they are in the process of adding more projects that appeal to boys. Our first year classes will be fully updated and you can see pictures of some of the projects if you look at each level (Beginner – Advanced).

We are providing machines and materials to use during class time. Each machine will be shared between 2 students. This works well since sewing is much more than machine sewing! This also gives the instructor more oversight for safety reasons.

All materials like fabric, zippers, interfacing, batting, thread, patterns are included in your class tuition.

For the 6-week classes, we have a list of basic supplies that the students will need to bring to the class and leave with their projects. See the Supplies List

Our classes run in 6 week sessions and summers are off. You can start and stop at any time (after you complete your 6-week session).

Eventually, we will have a couple of different sessions/levels in each class time period (always 4:1 student-teacher ratio). So you can skip any 6-week session that runs during your vacation. Then be sure to sign up for the next session and not miss out!
