The ideal pair of beginner sewing scissors depends on the age and hand size of your child.
Recommendations:
Most kids ages 8-12 do great with these beginner student fabric scissors. They sometimes are hard to find so I will try to keep a few in stock. They are low cost compared to really good fabric scissors (which will last a lifetime if you take care of them). I would expect the Fiskars to last 2-3 years of classes as long as they take care of them.

If you child has larger hands/close to adult size I’ve also had good luck with a generic style with titanium blades that comes in a 3 pack and a variety of colors. They will only need the middle size one (8.5″). The middle size is a bit big for the 10 year olds but they are able to use them. You can probably find a use for the other two pairs at home. Most likely they will not last as long as the fiskars but should last 1-2 years at least. Amazon Link
Either one of the above should work great. Save your $ and wait until later in their sewing journey to invest a really amazing pair.
